I love the way astrology can be used, somewhat like a magnifying glass, to see beyond surface-level events and assumptions. I find it to be a valuable healing modality, especially when reckoning with the past.

Recently, in an astrology class, we studied Martha Stewart’s natal chart, examining her story of success, imprisonment, and resilience. As we wove together our limited scope of what we know about her with the soul coordinates before us, a picture began to emerge, affording us a glimpse into the forces that shaped her as a pop-culture phenomenon.  

We wondered, just like in the book “What Happened to You?:  Conversations on Trauma, Resilience and Healing,” by Bruce D. Perry and Oprah Winfrey, about the possible series of past life events that influenced her early years, creating the conditions for this one.  

Astrology doesn’t just illuminate personal journeys; it also reveals the deeper threads of ancestral and karmic influence.

It is for this reason that I have found astrology to be an indispensable guide as I walk my own path of healing family karma. As I continue to explore my matrilineal story of disinheritance, sacrifice, and sorrow, I become more present to the gift it offers, both in providing clarity about the past and  bringing healing and peace to the present.

Martha Stewart’s Chart: Pluto, Purpose, and Transformation

One of my classmates watched the documentary about Martha Stewart and shared their observations during our discussion. At the time of her arrest, transiting Pluto was squaring her North Node, marking a profound moment of reckoning and an invitation to reassess her goals and purpose.

Of course, there’s more to her story, but right now I’m more interested in a different story, one that hits much closer to home.

Astrology reveals the essence of periods of profound transition and the transformation they invite. In Martha’s case, these intense transits tested everything she had built, ultimately paving the way for her to reform her career and image in remarkable ways.

This is one of astrology’s great gifts: its ability to shed light on pivotal moments, not just in individual lives but also within the deeper karmic patterns that shape families and communities. It asks us to consider: How are the challenges we face part of larger cycles of growth and renewal?

An Ancestral Story: The Disinherited Lineage

Recently, my mom sent me a message saying she had just discovered that we are descendants of Irish royalty.  Once upon a time, an Earl and his lady bore a daughter who chose to marry for love instead of station.  Though disowned and disinherited, this daughter of royal blood kept love alive in her daughter, and so on, until now.  My children represent the ninth generation of this legacy.  

The choice to marry for love rather than station created a ripple effect that continues to this day. My grandmother carried so much sorrow in her lifetime. I could never understand how she kept going, loss after loss after loss. Somehow, she ‘powered’ through, even as cancer attacked everything that was feminine within her.

These struggles reflect karmic patterns that echo through her natal chart, as well as those of my mother and me.

Both my mother and I have nodes on the Cancer-Capricorn axis, reflecting themes of lineage, emotional security, and the burdens of caretaking in a status-driven world. My grandmother’s Taurus-Scorpio nodal axis highlights transformation and the material challenges that shaped her life.

As I consider this, the memory of my mom’s cancer scare comes to mind.  Grandma, having already survived bouts of uterine and breast cancer,was beside herself with worry. She knew she didn’t want that for her “LuLu.” In the waiting period between the biopsy and results, I had the sense that my grandmother was literally, powerfully and purposefully willing the cancer out of my mother, taking it into herself instead.  Soon after my mom got a clean bill of health, grandma was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time.

This quiet yet powerful act of healing draws my attention to her North Node in Taurus, which is exactly conjunct Chiron – right down to the minute.  She was, in her way, a faithful alchemist, though she would never have referred to herself as such. Yet, this karmic signature sheds new light on the struggles she endured and the love she poured into those she cared for.

Astrology offers a way to understand and honor these connections. Through the language of the stars, we can trace the threads of unresolved stories that stretch across generations. For my family, it begins with one woman’s bold decision to choose love over legacy. Piecing this story together now, I see that I am part of this evolving story that is choosing love AS legacy.  

Astrology as a Tool for Healing Lineage Trauma

This isn’t just about Martha’s story or my story. It’s the story of astrology as a healing modality; one that has the power to explore family dynamics and uncover karmic legacies. Through the interplay of natal charts across generations, we gain insight into the emotional patterns and unresolved stories that we carry, often unknowingly.

In my family, the Cancer-Capricorn and Taurus-Scorpio themes echo loudly across the generations. These patterns manifest as caretaking burdens, struggles with material security, and deep transformative pain. Recognizing these karmic threads has brought me immense peace. I’ve come to see my grandmother’s sacrifices, my mother’s worries, and even my own struggles not as isolated events as part of a much larger story that I can learn from and grow within.

Healing through astrology is about understanding what came before as we reclaim our agency in the present. The awareness astrology brings allows us to break cycles of pain and loss, transforming them into opportunities for compassion and growth.

This work is sacred. It invites us to honor the choices, sacrifices, and wounds of those who came before us while freeing ourselves, and future generations, from carrying the same burdens.

Applying These Insights to Your Own Life
